After Marvel's explosive reveal of Spider-Man in the second "Captain America: Civil War" trailer, the wait seems longer than ever.

19-year-old actor Tom Holland will take on the role of the webslinger in "Civil War." We still don't have plot details on Peter Parker's role in the film, but we can discern a few hints about the third on-screen appearance of the legendary character from his costume.

His suit hasn't changed much from the webslinger's debut comic back in 1966, but there are a few important nods to his classic appearance that attentive fans were thrilled to see. Read on to see how Spidey's Marvel debut is staying in line with his old school appearance.

"Captain America: Civil War" arrives on May 6.

The new Spider-Man suit appears to closely resemble the original 1966 design from Steve Ditko, with elements from the partial redesign from Ditko's successor, John Romito Sr.

Spider-Man fires his trademark webs from a shooters, placed strategically on his wrists. They shoot when he places his middle and ring fingers on the triggers.

As we see in the trailer, Spider-Man's suit has external shooters that trigger when he touches them with his fingers. The shooters are colored black and look like bracelets.

Actors Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal are poised to make big waves in the Marvel universe when they debut in "Daredevil" and "Captain America: Civil War" later this year. As it turns out, the co-stars worked together on landing the roles that fans are dying to see.

While filming independent Irish film, "Pilgrimage," Holland and Bernthal teamed up to work on audition tapes to send to Marvel HQ.  Holland sent tapes for Spider-Man and Bernthal for Punisher. Both were eventually awarded their roles as the iconic characters.

“During this independent movie that we did in Ireland we were constantly making tapes for Marvel — just acting together," Bernthal told the New York Daily News. "We were making tapes from Ireland in the process of getting him [Holland] cast in 'Spider-Man,' and then he and I made a tape for The Punisher."

The audition tapes won't likely see the light of day anytime soon – "you can call Marvel and ask for it, but that’s like breaking into Fort Knox," Bernthal said. But the tapes seemed to play at least some part in landing the talented pair their roles.

Just in case the audition tapes weren't enough, Holland asked for help from Thor himself  – actor Chris Hemsworth. The two worked together on the 2015 seafaring epic, "In the Heart of the Sea."

"I called the guys at Marvel when they were casting (Spider-Man) and I heard he was in the final handful of guys and said, 'Look for what it's worth you're not going to meet a harder working more appreciative kind of guy,'" Hemsworth said.

We'll see Bernthal as Punisher when "Daredevil" season two drops March 18 and Holland will debut as Spider-Man when "Civil War" is out May 6.

A new Spider-Man movie is coming next summer and we have our first tease at the movie featuring Spidey himself and a familiar old face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The teaser trailer shows off a glimpse of Tony Stark's friend Happy Hogan, played by director Jon Favreau ("The Jungle Book"), with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he catches him wearing a pretty dismal Spidey suit. It looks like his new best friend Tony Stark sent him over some new threads and they're looking pretty sharp as we see Holland fly through the sky in a sleek new suit.

The first official trailer for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" starring Holland will debut Thursday night during "Jimmy Kimmel Live." We were first introduced to Holland in this summer's "Captain America: Civil War" after Disney and Sony Pictures partnered up to bring Spidey to the big screen with the Avengers team.

Jimmy Kimmel debuted the world premiere of next summer's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" Thursday night on his late-night show.

While you're digesting that first trailer, Sony Pictures and Marvel dropped a second international trailer around the time online and it offers up a lot of new footage. While the movie's first trailer suggests the new Spidey flick will take place during "Captain America: Civil War," this second trailer basically confirms "Homecoming" will chronicle the events before, during, and after the events of "Civil War."

The international trailer opens with a familiar scene of Tony Stark's Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) from the blockbuster's big fight sequence.

You know, the scene where Iron Man yells out "Underoos" to call in Spidey to the Avengers crew.

iron man spider man homecoming

But we also see scenes that are clearly from before that big teamup when Peter Parker has his own suit and afterwards when he learns Tony Stark is going to allow him to keep his new Spidey suit.

A few more new and extended scenes include one of Tony Stark telling Spidey he's not an Avenger (sad) and more of Michael Keaton's villainous Vulture who may or may not be putting together a team of villains. It definitely looks like he has some croonies, one of whom may be played by Donald Glover.

The international trailer for the film also offers up an official synopsis for the movie:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Note that Sony's Australia YouTube channel is not making the trailer available in the US. It wasn't pulled before other media sites grabbed the trailer.

Tony Stark becomes the Messiah in Marvel's 'Civil War II' — here's what it all means

$

This post contains spoilers for "Civil War II."

The image is immediately recognizable as the Pietà, where the Virgin Mary holds the dead body of her son, only this time it's Spider-Man holding the body of Tony Stark.

"Civil War II," in case anyone missed it in the first seven issues of the latest Marvel Comics crossover, is a story of Christ.

passion of starkFor comparison, here's Michelangelo:

michelangelo pietaWhat does Tony Stark, the billionaire genius and Iron Man creator, have to do with Jesus? The connection in "Civil War II," written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez, is compelling and provocative.

(For those not interested in analysis, I'll add that "Civil War II" is also a fantastic comic book event — on par with anything you see in the movies.)

Stark, in short, believes the future is unknowable and everyone has the potential to do good.

Jesus might agree, even if for Stark the future is unknowable because of chaos theory and for him it is unknowable because of God.

The drama of "Civil War II" is set into motion when a new character, Ulysses, develops the power to see visions of the future. After his prophecy helps the Avengers stop a cosmic threat, Stark alone recognizes the danger of relying on precognitive visions, especially for criminal enforcement. First, he is skeptical that any prediction could explain all the possibilities of the future. Second, he knows that power corrupts, and that both Ulysses and the people who use his powers might be biased.

While the other heroes appear willing to accept Ulysses's powers at face value, Stark calls for closer examination. When Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, invites Ulysses to join a world superhero team called The Ultimates, Stark objects.

And so begins the central conflict of "Civil War II": Stark and his band of outlaws fighting against Danvers and the assembled forces of world power.

stark looks awayStark's position is fundamentally Christian, if expressed as a kind of religious futurism: He says we shouldn't use politics to justify violence.

This is, in fact, the central message of the New Testament, according to the critical theorist René Girard: Jesus is standing up for people who have been scapegoated through history, insisting that all men are equal in the eyes of God. Stark, for his part, might say that all men contain infinite possibilities, and that restricting people's freedom of choice is a dangerous game.

Stark's statements in "Civil War II" often contain religious language:

"I respect the future. I believe in the future. I worship at its feet," he says at one point.

"What are the odds of these visions being true and pure and right," he asks at another.

Is Stark a Christian? Though he doesn't appear particularly religious in the comics, he clearly has a spiritual side. For one, he's a recovering alcoholic who is no doubt familiar with the reformed Christianity offered in AA, which boils down to belief in a benevolent higher power.

stark brain x

Stark later discovers that Ulysses' foresight is like an uncannily accurate prediction algorithm. Presenting his findings to the Illuminati, Stark warns that the precognitive visions are a kind of profiling — a modeling of reality that erases individual differences — and can easily be abused.

"It's profiling. It's profiling our future. And by Carol acting on it as if it were the Bible ... she is, by any definition, profiling individuals," Stark says, again in religious terms.

Stark's comments about profiling are, of course, rather topical. After all, we live in an era when prediction algorithms are used in judicial sentencing, and where people talk about using them to assess everything from societal value to terrorist potential. We also live in an era when certain groups, among them black males in the US, are often unfairly treated like criminals.

The political connection becomes clear when Ulysses has a shocking vision: Miles Morales, the black-hispanic kid who is the new Spider-Man, holding the impaled body of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.

Rogers, who can be considered in this series something like the voice of God, has a friendly conversation with Morales and tells him to go in peace. Danvers, however, insists on arresting Morales.

Thus Stark finds himself fighting to protect an innocent soul from oppressive forces. It's a battle he can't win by force, not least because Danvers appears to overpower him.

marvel vs iron

And so the crucifixion: Battling in front of the US Capitol, Stark is blasted from his suit of armor and falls back, arms outstretched.

In the moment that follows, revelation. Ulysses transmits to the assembled heroes a sequence of possible futures (each drawn by a different artist), from the dark to the bright to the bizarre, that make clear how little we know and how little we control.

And then the lamentation of Stark, as Morales holds his fallen body ...

The entombment, as Stark is placed in a kind of cryogenics pod ...

entombment of stark

And the resurrection, as a hologram of Stark's body appears to rise, with the promise that he will walk on earth again.

resurrection of tony stark

What does Stark's sacrifice accomplish?

In the Marvel Universe, his actions set the stage for an exciting new era. Danvers, chastised and repentant, hints that she will run for president. Beast, the blue furry mutant who explains Stark's actions in the end, appears a kind of Saint Paul. There's also a bombshell cast of Stark acolytes — including Morales and the Muslim-American Ms. Marvel—in a new team called Champions. At least as far as story potential, this is the best Marvel has looked in a long time.

In our own universe, perhaps this story can teach something too. For one, be humble, remembering how little you know. For another, do not let freedom be trampled by concern for security.

There's also no denying that Danvers, the short-haired blonde leading a global government agency, resembles a fantasy version of Hillary Clinton. Since Danvers is on the wrong side of the conflict, the series could be taken as a criticism of Clinton. At the same time, since she ultimately sees the light, the series might endorse her in the end.

There is, in any case, a light warning against the kind of scapegoating  (i.e., unfair vilification) directed at Clinton during the 2016 campaign.

"Cap, tell him I'm not Satan," Danvers says at one point.

"She's not Satan," Rogers agrees.

As for Stark, it's not clear who he resembles. Bendis pointed to an only superficial connection between him and fellow billionaire Donald Trump in a 2012 tweet that he retweeted last week: "Donald Trump is like Tony Stark if Tony Stark wasn't a genius or philanthropist and just sucked."

In the end, we might not have anyone like Stark in our universe. It clear at least from this comic, however, that the gospel of love lives on.

The new 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' trailer reveals Tony Stark learned an important lesson in 'Iron Man 3'

spider man tom holland

It's been a great week for trailers. DC kicked off the wave a few days ago with the new Justice League trailer, and now Marvel has followed suit by giving us a brand new look at our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man's (Tom Holland) upcoming solo movie. The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer has officially debuted online, and one very specific moment from the new preview shows Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) preaching a lesson that he learned during the events of Iron Man 3. He specifically says:

If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it.

tony stark spider man homecoming

Harsh words, right? Although it sounds like Tony is a tad overprotective of the young Peter Parker, the quote also shows the evolution of Mr. Stark over the course of his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During the events of Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, Tony was almost never in a scenario where a handy flying suit was more than a few moments away. In Iron Man 2 he even went so far as to say that "the suit and I are one." Then Iron Man 3 happened. Tony became dependent on his suits while dealing with his PTSD following the Battle of New York (quite literally retreating into his shell) and that dependency turned into a major weakness during his fight against The Mandarin (Ben Kings- er... Guy Pearce) in 2013.

The entire thesis of Iron Man 3 is the idea that a hero needs to be more than his or her suit, and now Tony is passing along that hard-learned lesson to the young wall crawler.

The ultimate lesson that Tony learned from that incident? Prove that you can let go of the suit to actually earn it.

By contrast to that climactic scene in Iron Man 3, Peter fights tooth and nail for Tony to allow him to keep the Spider-Man outfit. His impetuous nature is showing Tony that he's not ready for the responsibilities of becoming a full-blown Avenger by showing just how much he wants to be an Avenger. Ironic, right? You can see more from the moment in the full trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

tom holland spider man homecoming

On a deeper level, this seemingly insignificant comment hammers home how everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe builds off of what has come before it. Events that transpired (and lessons learned) in Phase 2 continue to have relevance over what's taking place in Phase 3. Marvel has continuously proven its deep-seated commitment to its continuity and using a lesson from Iron Man 3 to directly inform how its youngest hero will evolve and earn his place as an Avenger is a genuinely inspired creative decision. To put it bluntly: we're incredibly excited for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man Homecoming trailer

The third trailer for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” just came out and it introduces some new footage of its villain Vulture in action (former Batman Michael Keaton takes the role) as well as some cool glimpses of spider-tech courtesy of Peter Parker’s new sort-of boss, Tony Stark.

In the trailer, we hear Parker say that he’s Stark’s intern. That's kind of true, but also not really.

In addition to some exciting features of the updated spider-suit, which is reflective of Iron Man's suit and gives Parker 576 web shooter combinations, the trailer also emphasizes what this new franchise is all about: the fact that Peter Parker is just a teenager with Spanish quizzes and girls, played by an actual teenager and not a 27-year-old Tobey Maguire.

The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Zendaya’s character, and teases everyone who campaigned for Donald Glover to play Spider-Man a few years back with his brief appearance talking to Spider-Man. Glover’s character is not named, and will most likely remain a mystery until the film's release on July 7.

A popular fan theory that Spider-Man actually first appeared in 'Iron Man 2' has been confirmed

$

tom holland spider man homecoming spiderman

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Tom Holland plays Spider-Man in Marvel's movies, including the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
  • He confirmed a popular fan theory that his character first shows up in 2010's "Iron Man 2."
  • It's a scene where a kid almost fights a big robot — before Iron Man swoops in to save him.

Tom Holland — who's playing Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man in Marvel's movies— confirmed a theory that fans have been wondering about for nearly a decade.

As it turns out, Peter Parker was teased back in 2010's "Iron Man 2," way back when the partnership with Sony, which own the rights to use Spider-Man in movies, and Disney, which owns Marvel, was a mere glint in Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter's eye.

In "Iron Man 2," a young boy faces down a robot that's causing chaos in a crowd. Before the robot gets to blow him up, Tony Stark swoops in and takes down the robot.

"Nice work, kid," he says, before flying away.

That kid's name, according to fan theorists? Peter Parker.

The age of the boy makes sense, given the release of "Iron Man 2" in 2010 and Peter Parker's character being about 15 years old in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Holland told The Huffington Post that he asked Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, about the theory, and Feige confirmed it.

"I can confirm that as of today. I literally had a conversation with Kevin Feige only 20 minutes ago. Maybe I’ve just done a big, old spoiler, but it’s out there now,"Holland told HuffPo. "It’s cool. I like the idea that Peter Parker has been in the universe since the beginning."

Later in the Marvel movies, Peter Parker and Tony Stark turn out to be buds. Stark recruits Parker as a sort of "Avengers" intern in "Captain America: Civil War." And Stark is a prominent character in the forthcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" movie, if the trailers are anything to go by. You can see the movie on July 7.

'Spider-Man' star says he was disappointed the first time he put on the Spidey costume

tom holland late night seth meyers

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Tom Holland is playing the new Peter Parker in July's "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
  • He's been a fan of the character ever since he can remember.
  • Holland was pumped to try on the Spidey suit for the first time after he was cast.
  • The first time he saw himself in the suit, Holland said he was disappointed.
  • The suit was too loose and baggy since it was designed around his stunt double.

Tom Holland has been waiting his whole life to play Spider-Man, so when he landed the role of Peter Parker he couldn't wait to try on the suit.

Unfortunately, becoming the webslinger for the first time in "Captain America: Civil War" fell short of his expectations. Holland told Seth Meyers the first time he saw himself in the suit it was kind of underwhelming.

"I have to say it was very disappointing," said Holland to a surprised audience. "I'll explain. Everyone's like, 'What a d---.'"

Meyers joked that it was because Holland realized he didn't have Spidey's powers. Holland said the actual reason he was a bit bummed was because the suit didn't fit right.

seth meyers tom holland

"I go to my costume fitting and there's all these mirrors so I had them close the mirrors because I wanted to see the suit for the first time on," said Holland. "I put the suit on. It felt great."

But when the mirrors were opened something was wrong.

"Because it was my stunt double's suit, and he was much bigger than me, it was really baggy and saggy and it looked like a very old, sad Spider-Man," he said. "It definitely wasn't as heroic as I would have hoped."

But the lifelong Spidey fan says landing the role was really a dream of a lifetime and one he didn't imagine would happen.

"When they announced that they were recasting Spider-Man I couldn't have imagined that I would get the job," said Holland. "I asked my agents for an audition just because I wanted to meet the Marvel people ... but now, I'm in the movie so it's crazy."

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" will be in theaters July 7.

Warning: There are some minor spoilers ahead for "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

A life-long fan of Spider-Man, Tom Holland has been prepping for this role all his life and he absolutely nailed it in his first outing as the new webslinger.

Not only does the sixth Spider-Man film understand the character better than previous outings, but "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is also genuinely funny while adding an unexpected amount of heart from the unlikeliest of places.

If you weren't convinced by Holland's brief appearance in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War," his quirky and awkward Peter Parker will win you over here.

spider man homecoming

The second reboot — featuring a younger and more accurately aged Parker in high school — takes place briefly before and during, but mostly after the events of "Civil War." It presents Spider-Man in the way you would expect any social media-engrossed teen to behave today if they learned they had superhuman abilities and were teaming up with his or her icons: You'd make a shaky, homemovie about your escapades with the Avengers. Holland's genuine, giddy emotion while babbling and sometimes whispering to his cellphone camera could just as easily be secret footage Marvel and Sony shot of Holland reacting to meeting the A-list "Civil War" cast for the first time.

That's something Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who both took on the Spider-Man role after turning 30, wouldn't be able to pull off genuinely.

tobey maguire andrew garfield tom holland

"Homecoming" may be the sixth Spider-Man movie from Sony in 15 years, but it's by far one of the top two films in the entire franchise. (The other is the first from 2002.)

Much of the credit there no doubt goes to Sony teaming up with Disney and Marvel to bring Spidey into its Cinematic Universe complete with Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and the rest of the gang. The result of the collaboration is a much more polished Spidey movie that isn't weighed down by multiple villains or an unnecessary origin story — one most are familiar with after five Spider-Man films.

"Homecoming" wastes no time on rehashing the tired story of a radioactive bite which gives Peter his powers or dwelling on how his Uncle Ben gets killed. The spider bite is only mentioned in passing when Parker's "Star Wars"-loving sidekick Ned (Jacob Batalon) accidentally learns his best friend's secret identity. Skipping the stuff fans know allows the film to focus on Queens' friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

And what a Spider-Man he is.

spider man homecoming

Parker's not particularly good at intimidating criminals, using his spider webs, or soaring through the sky. He's actually pretty terrible at being an efficient hero — crashing through and destroying property in people's backyards and splitting a ferry in half, but it's one of the most refreshing aspects of "Homecoming," not just as a Spider-Man movie, but in the very crowded genre of superhero movies. There is no montage of Peter becoming an expert webslinger in several minutes. He's learning throughout the entire movie how to handle his powers, and by the end, it's clear he still has a lot more to learn if he wants to run with the Avengers.

His foe is played by none other than Michael Keaton who goes from playing Batman and Birdman to another winged character, Vulture, in "Homecoming." Keaton's character, Adrian Toomes, is used to explain a key plothole from 2012's "The Avengers": What ever happened to all of the alien weapons and tools left on Earth after the film's end battle? They've been rounded up by Vulture and his squad who are selling them for cash. Keaton's performance is best when he's opposite Parker, particularly in one heated verbal showdown in a car where you can feel the weight of the scene through Peter's averting eyes.

One of the other things that sets this Spider-Man film apart is that it's genuinely funny. It's not just a funny Spidey movie. Next to "Guardians of the Galaxy," it may be Marvel's funniest movie.

Holland's eager yet awkward Parker delivers big laughs as he navigates the many offerings in his high-tech suit from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), tries (and fails) to make a meaningful connection with Stark's assistant Happy (Jon Favreau) by calling and texting at all hours, and debates a high school crush with his virtual assistant, Karen. The film even pokes fun a bit at an iconic moment from the first film. Spidey's best bud Ned also received a lot of laughs at our screening for a few key one-liners.

But the greatest message in "Homecoming"— and one that makes it a great sell for kids and adults alike — is that it's not the suit that makes the man. It's a lesson imparted from Tony Stark who becomes an unlikely pseudo father to Parker throughout the film. What's nice is that, unlike most cameos, Stark's isn't one where he pops up once or twice in the film at the beginning and end. He's present for a good chunk of time throughout to lend advice, a helping hand, or to discipline the teen as if he's his own son. It's an endearing relationship that looks like it will continue well into the next Spider-Man movie, or at least when Spidey pops up in the Cinematic Universe next.

"Homecoming" also contains a few surprises that are better left to experience in theaters. Fans will be happy to see a bunch of cameos from some popular TV stars — Hannibal Burress, Martin Starr (Gilfoyle on "Silicon Valley"), and Michael Mando (Nacho on "Better Call Saul") are among the star-studded cast which also includes Marisa Tomei and Zendaya. Donald Glover ("Atlanta") also appears in a brief role which will have comic fans buzzing in their seats.

As always, stick around after the film for not one, but two end-credits scenes.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" is in theaters July 7.
